Wanya Haider, based in Kolkata, has built a successful career as an interior designer through her sheer passion, creativity, and relentless pursuit of excellence.
The biggest challenge Wanya faced in her entrepreneurial journey was finding clients and managing the extensive workload that comes with running a business solo. Starting from scratch with no financial support, she bootstrapped her way through every stage of the business. "To overcome these challenges, I focused on continuous learning and networking," she explains. Attending free webinars, courses, and industry events helped her acquire new skills and stay up-to-date with the latest trends and techniques. Seeking mentorship and learning from experienced professionals also played a crucial role in her development.
From creating detailed drawings and documentation to overseeing every aspect of a project on-site, the demands were immense. Wanya developed efficient systems for project management, prioritizing tasks, and streamlining processes to ensure everything was completed on time and to the highest standard.
What inspired Wanya to become an entrepreneur was her lifelong passion for creativity. "As a child, I was always creating art, and I knew I wanted to pursue a career in a creative field," she recalls. Discovering interior design, with encouragement from her father, allowed her to turn her passion into a business.
After becoming an entrepreneur, Wanya's journey has been a continuous adventure filled with daily challenges and new opportunities. "Each day brings something new, whether it's dealing with clients, managing vendors, or coordinating with team members," she shares. This constant activity keeps her motivated and driven to strive for better performance every day.
Wanya has learned several key lessons. Adaptability, resilience, and effective communication are essential for success. Building professional relationships opens doors to new opportunities, while inspiring and guiding a team fosters a productive work environment. Staying updated and seeking feedback supports growth and adaptation.
She has participated in prestigious competitions such as stage design for Lakme Fashion Week and school design for the ABID Exhibition. Her impressive portfolio includes notable spaces like Vivara, JW Marriott properties, Aatmosphere, Olivia Ice Cream Parlour at The Backyard, and a 4BHK in Utalika. The positive client reviews she has received reflect the quality of her work and dedication to excellence.
Wanya finds it dynamic and rewarding. "It offers exciting opportunities for innovation, especially with the rise of sustainable practices," she observes. Despite its competitive nature, the industry allows designers to make a significant impact on people's environments and overall well-being.
"I aim to take on larger-scale projects, collaborate with industry professionals, and enhance my design portfolio," she shares. Growing her team and creating a beautiful office space are also part of her aspirations.
Her message to everyone is clear: "Whenever you feel fear or hesitation, ask yourself what you would do if you weren't afraid—and then go ahead and do that."
