Kavya Karnatac| The Entrepreneurs of India February 2025 Magazine Edition #17

Kavya’s journey from a bright-eyed overachiever in Nainital to the becoming founder of KK Create is nothing short of riveting. Raised in a household where discipline and passion coalesced, her father, an ex-BSF jawan and an HR professional, brought in a deep-seated wanderlust, while her mother, a devoted teacher, nurtured her love for education. Their divergent influences set the stage for Kavya’s eclectic path. Defying convention was an art she mastered early. Scoring a perfect 10 CGPA in her 10th grade, she was expected to follow the hallowed route of engineering. Instead, she chose humanities, a move met with apprehension but grudging acceptance from her parents—albeit with the condition of pursuing Mathematics and Economics as optional subjects. This tenacity carried her to the prestigious Lady Shri Ram College, where the crucible of an all-women environment shaped her resolve. Immersed in the Dramatics Society, she orchestrated over 330 performances, honing her creative and leadership acumen while bagging the ‘Best in Dramatics’ award.

Her academic pursuits led her to the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, where she pursued a rare Master’s in Media and Culture Studies. Here, she developed a meticulous understanding of research, documentary filmmaking, and the intricate dance between media and society.

Thus, KK Create was born—a platform dedicated to chronicling India’s resplendent cultures. In an era saturated with content, Kavya discerns that the fulcrum of success pivots on persistence. “If you wouldn’t do it every single day, even if nobody’s watching, then don’t bother starting,” she asserts. Treating content creation as a business rather than a frivolous pursuit, she mastered not only the craft but also the nuances of team management, financial prudence, and branding. By deconstructing successful creators and assimilating platform algorithms, she sculpted a strategy that ensured longevity over fleeting virality.

Content creation, she argues, is more than personal expression; it is an industry that generates employment. Her 10-member team is a microcosm of this transformation. A 20-year-old thumbnail designer from Rajasthan not only sustains herself but has also created jobs for three others.

Her first scriptwriter, hired on the strength of a handwritten letter, exemplifies the doors that content creation has opened. The next frontier, she believes, lies in hyperlocal creators—voices from the hinterlands sharing authentic narratives in their native tongues, bridging the chasm between tradition and digital evolution.

Support from her family has been the linchpin of her ascent. Her mother, devoid of any business background, pushed her to think like an entrepreneur from day one, questioning every strategic move. Her father, ever the stalwart cheerleader, celebrates every victory, no matter how minuscule. This emotional scaffolding, she believes, is what aspiring entrepreneurs need most—a familial belief that fortifies resilience amid uncertainty.

The inaugural six months saw her toiling with a borrowed laptop, an antiquated microphone, and a makeshift green screen costing a meager ₹40. Unwavering discipline saw her releasing a video daily, meticulously analyzing feedback, and engaging tirelessly with her audience. Today, with a decade-spanning vision, she traverses the length and breadth of India, seeking to document its myriad cultures, one district at a time.

Challenges have been manifold—from the labyrinth of hiring and retention to the labyrinthine task of monetization. In her nascent days, despite burgeoning traction, financial sustainability eluded her. It was only through strategic brand collaborations, contract negotiations, and revenue diversification that KK Create metamorphosed into a formidable entity. Navigating platform algorithms, audience preferences, and brand expectations is a tightrope walk—one that requires perpetual innovation and an unerring finger on the pulse of industry trends.

Unlike creators who skim the surface, Kavya and her team delve deep, conducting on-ground research to unravel stories firsthand. “Culture isn’t confined to monuments; it breathes in our dialects, our garments, and the way we break bread,” she notes. By chronicling this lived reality, KK Create has positioned itself as a vanguard of cultural storytelling.

Experienceys, should never be sidelined in the pursuit of ambition. Every role, every challenge, and every lesson imbibed in the early days culminates in the ability to make informed, strategic decisions later. The path of an entrepreneur, she concedes, is arduous but infinitely rewarding for those who dare to walk it.
