The patient was suffering from cachexia and severe aortic stenosis, which made open heart surgery too risky. As a result, Dr. Sonawane decided to perform a transcarotid surgery, a highly complicated procedure that is rarely performed in India. Normally, this type of surgery would be carried out through the femoral artery in the groin, but due to the patient's malnutrition and tiny groin vessels, Dr. Sonawane had to use the carotid artery in the neck instead. This marked the first time a transcarotid surgery was performed in Karnataka and only the third time it has been performed in India.
Despite the high level of difficulty and risk involved in the procedure, Dr. Sonawane was able to successfully salvage the patient, who was able to leave the hospital just 48 hours later. This groundbreaking surgery is a testament to Dr. Sonawane's skill and dedication as a cardiologist, and it highlights the importance of seeking out innovative and personalized treatment options for patients with complex medical conditions.
